For my money the most consistently enthralling LP of ‘06, though there was definitely no shortage of great ones this year.
Best Song:
Current 93 “This Autistic Imperium is Nihil Reich” off “Black Ships Ate the Sky”
Which could’ve just as easily grabbed best album honors. And Om “At Giza” off “Conference of the Birds.”
Best Debut:
Daniel Higgs “Ancestral Songs” (Holy Mountain).
Funny to think of anything Mr. Higgs would do this late in the game as a debut, yet here it is – his first solo album of brooding repetitious psych folk.
Best Reissue:
Maypole “The Real” LP (Anopheles).
Dynamic early '70s prog-cum-powerpop on clear vinyl from the masters of aural rediscovery at Anopheles.
